Plural Quantifications and Generalized Quantifiers

چکیده

This paper discusses two important results on the expressive limitations of elementary languages that David Kaplan established a few decades ago, and clarifies how they relate to the expressive power of plural constructions of natural languages. Kaplan proved that such plural quantifications as the following cannot be paraphrased into elementary languages: Most things are funny. (1) Some critics admire only one another. (2) The proof that (1) cannot be paraphrased into elementary languages is often taken to support the generalized quantifier approach to natural languages, and the proof that (2) cannot be so paraphrased is usually taken to mean that (2) is a second-order sentence. The paper presents an alternative interpretation: Kaplan’s results provide important steps toward clarifying the expressive power of plural constructions of natural languages vis-à-vis their singular cousins. In doing so, the paper compares (regimented) plural languages with generalized quantifier languages, and plural logic with second-order logic.

Monotonicity and Collective Quantification

This article studies the monotonicity behavior of plural determiners that quantify over collections. Following previous work, we describe the collective interpretation of determiners such as all, some and most using generalized quantifiers of a higher type that are obtained systematically by applying a type shifting operator to the standard meanings of determiners in Generalized Quantifier Theo...

Plural Predication

My thesis consists of three self-contained but interconnected papers. In the first one, 'Word and Objects', I assume that it is possible to quantify over absolutely everything, and show that certain English sentences containing collective predicates resist paraphrase in first-order languages and even in first-order languages enriched with plural quantifiers. To capture such sentences I develop ...

Comparative Quantifiers and Plural Predication

Somewhat surprisingly, there is little work addressing this question even though there are two distinguished traditions each concerned with a subset of the paradigm. On the one hand, Generalized Quantifier Theory (GQT) offers an analysis of expressions as in (1)a,b as run of the mill quantifiers, while the theory of comparative constructions, analyzes expressions as in (1)d,e as amount comparat...

Plural Quantifiers Inversely Linked

Inverse Linking constructions display an asymmetric requirement of “number concord” that can be summarized as follows: if the inversely linked quantifier is plural the host NP has to be plural as well. This paper argues that under suitable assumptions Beck’s proposal in [2] for definite plural DP-arguments of nouns can be extended to quantificational plural DPs in Inverse Linking constructions....

Extending Temporal Logics with Data Variable Quantifications

Although data values are available in almost every computer system, reasoning about them is a challenging task due to the huge data size or even infinite data domains. Temporal logics are the well-known specification formalisms for reactive and concurrent systems. Various extensions of temporal logics have been proposed to reason about data values, mostly in the last decade. Among them, one nat...
